Artesia Court Halts Enforcement of Anti Picketing Ordinance
U S District Judge Howard Bratton issued a temporary restraining order blocking Artesia from enforcing an anti picketing ordinance. Five citizens filed the suit asserting First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. Former city workers have been on strike since September seeking union recognition of the United Steelworkers. The city passed the ordinance in October to curb disturbances near officials homes. Jackson, a plaintiff, says he is a community organizer and not a union member. Police chief resignation followed violence accusations tied to the dispute.
