State prosecutors fault Texas Liquor Control Board control

A five month probe by the state attorney general and DPS found that the Texas Liquor Control Board was largely influenced by the alcohol industry. Lubbock Woman Wins Mrs. Texas Title in Pageant

Mrs. Max Wade (Jeanne) White of Lubbock won the Mrs. Texas title after three days of homemaking and personality contests. She and her husband earned an expense paid trip to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Aug 14 23 to compete in Mrs. America. First runnerup was Mrs. Florida White of El Paso. second runnerup Mrs. Jeanne Elliott of Houston. White was picked from six finalists chosen by mailed entries and was notified June 17.

NEW ATTACK FEARED U.S. Troops Move To Defend Saigon

The Associated Press reports thousands of U.S. troops were pulled from Saigon’s perimeter in a redeployment to cut infiltration routes and deter Viet Cong and North Vietnamese attacks. About 3,000 infantrymen were newly assigned to guard outer limits and approaches, with more deployed outward, as Saigon faces intensified warfare since May 5. The action signals a serious U.S. assessment of the threat and marks a shift in the city’s war-torn status.

Two Blazes Still Out Of Control

In central and northern California two major wildfires remain out of control as crews battled for hours. The Libre Mountain blaze near Los Angeles blackened over 28 000 acres and threatened cabins while the Reservoir Fire near Bouquet Canyon neared small homes before being contained.

El Paso approves $15 million civic center bond

Special taxpayers approved a $15 million bond to finance a downtown civic center in El Paso. The plan includes a 3,000 seat theater and a 95,000 square foot exhibition hall. With 68 of 70 precincts reporting the tally was 11,850 for and 9,765 against.
