Rights Group Firefight Sparks Seige During King March

In Philadelphia Mississippi a civil rights group at the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party headquarters exchanged gunfire with unknown assailants in a siege described by Ralph Featherstone of the SNCC. A memorial march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. later degenerated into stone throwing and fist fighting as confrontation swept through the city. Police reported shooting incidents with few details given and no satisfaction to civil rights workers.

Summer Arrives with Turbulence Over Panhandle

Turbulence returns to the Panhandle as funnel clouds, two-inch rains and hurricane winds struck areas south of Perryton and north of Grover. Severe thunderstorm watches stretched across the Panhandle and parts of the northwestern Plains as 2:33 p.m. signaled summer. Continuous showers and heavy downpours affected Dalhart, Perryton, Clovis, and nearby towns with radar indicated lingering activity into the night.
