An area-wide burst of sun and warm air ends a cool spell and ushers in summer with predicted highs in the mid 90s and near 100 across the Lubbock region. Thunderstorms may form tonight and Tuesday as moist air rises, with a 20 percent chance of rain.
A U S Navy landing ship evacuated about 270 Americans and foreigners from Beirut as the Spiegel Grove prepared for a 44 hour sail to Athens. The operation, described as successful without incident, included 116 Americans, 65 Britons and others.

Democrats in Austin ended their state party convention hours early using walkie talkies to coordinate delegates. The nominating committee aimed to list 32 at large delegates for the Democratic National Convention and relay choices to the screening panel led by Calvin Guest. Guest then halted the session, reading gates and 100 alternates, and adjourned after a quick motion and benediction.
