Lubbock council clash over FAA guidelines seeks five more security officers while FAA officials in person reaffirm three additional posts. Dr Bryce Campbell argues only one more may be necessary as the budget plan awaits action and FAA requirements remain in writing.
Bids totaling 1.127 million dollars were submitted by three Lubbock firms for construction of the new central library. Tabulation and financial analysis were planned before contracts are awarded.
Next bid totals place Page and Wirtz Construction as apparent low bidder at 767 000 plus 67 000 for basement work with completion in 365 days. Other bids include McMillan 780 900 plus 67 979 and Chisum 203 475 plus 2 670 for basement with basements options.
In New York the Democratic presidential primary yields a McGovern victory seen as approaching the first ballot nomination. Rep. Bella Abzug is defeated for re election while Rep. Emanuel Celler trails a woman challenger amid a complex tally. McGovern projects 175 to 178 delegates with 200 as a minimum target as Shirley Chisholm also seeks delegates.

A television cable worker’s pickup plunged into a sewage line when the alley gave way in the 5400 block of 26th and 28th streets. Ziegler says Westmoreland will step down June 30 with Bruce Palmer as acting chief until Abrams is confirmed. The announcement follows usual ceremonial honors for the outgoing leader. Thunderstorms and heavy rain potential shadow the summer start in the South Plains with reports of hail near Dumas and possible funnel clouds.
Washington reports the Air Force orders a precautionary grounding of 215 F111 fighters stationed at Nellis Cannon Mountain Home and other bases following the second crash of the swing wing jet. The Eglin incident killed two crewmen after parachute failure. Previous crashes blamed on pilot error mechanical failures and undetermined causes with a prior ground in 1971 tied to parachute door release issues.
North Vietnamese regiment backed by tanks counterattacked marines north of Hue, killing 237 North Vietnamese and 31 Marines in a dawn to dusk battle. Twenty percent of the Marines wounded, tanks knocked out, and air strikes for control of Quang Tri Province amid heavy fighting and large-scale U S air support.
About 3 000 delegates from all 50 states and many nations attend a Perry Flippin report on a national conference where engineers confront a communications crisis. William M Magruder a White House consultant warns the crisis could penalize the nation for years to come.
