A field hand guided Amarillo firemen to a wheatfield fire five miles south of the city. The blaze burned about a quarter of a section on the Wayne Dambe farm, reportedly caused by a truck muffler failure while hauling grain. AP Wirephoto.
Vice President Nixon and Senator Kennedy campaigned side by side in Sioux Falls and Fargo amid farm and defense topics. Symington and Johnson also attracted crowds as Kennedy drew the larger audience and promised new farm approaches while Nixon prepared remarks in Minot and St Louis.
State police reported Sunday night the body of U S Rep Douglas H Elliott Republican Pennsylvania was found in a state park near Chambersburg Pa. He appeared to have committed suicide after being elected to Congress last April to fill an unexpired term.
Dayton Police Sgt. Virgil Beck’s six year fight to save his son Robert ends with the boy’s death after a pioneering kidney transplant. Beck sold his home and car to fund treatment and donated a kidney but the operation could not halt the child’s chronic nephritis and Robert died at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.
A left-wing pressure group within Britain's Labour party calls on leader Hugh Gaitskell to resign alleging he is too soft toward capitalism. The group says he represents a dictatorial right-wing clique that soft-pedals socialist doctrine and cooperates with Conservative Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on issues like the H bomb.
The Cuban government economic delegation left Moscow on Sunday for Warsaw after talks on trade, economic and cultural relations. The mission was led by Antonio Nunez Jimenez, director of the qiatocat Institute of Agrarian Re arm.
A 3 year old New Home child Oscar Roman died when he fell from a car and was run over by a wheel after 10 p m on Sunday. He was visiting friends on the C E Roper farm 134 miles southwest of New Home. The accident happened as the car backed from the front yard. Funeral arrangements were pending at Stanly Funeral Home. Parents’ identities were not learned. The death was pronounced at the scene by Justice of the Peace C A Clem.
Thieves stole four Antony Armstrong-Jones wax figures from Madame Tussaud's and left one propped in a phone booth. The 165 pound dummy, worth 500 pounds, escaped damage except for a small mark on a hand. Scotland Yard suspects shoppers mingled with crowds to aid the theft.
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt reports a telegram from Adlai Stevenson after she suggested he would accept a draft for his third Democratic presidential nomination. The message reads I surrender.
Lubbock police report only nine curfew offenses since the city curfew law took effect for juveniles, with no repeat offenses. Officers cite parental and juvenile cooperation, noting most youths were found “riding around” or for minor reasons such as bowling or visiting a relative, at various city locations.
Special to the Avalanche Journal reports two traffic deaths in Lea County over the weekend. Kenneth Mack Coleman, 32, of Eunice, died Saturday when his car went out of control on state highway 18 and rolled. Henry Fred Speaker, 42, of Hobbs, died Sunday after being struck on U S 180 east of Hobbs. Speaker was thrown onto a car hood and into a windshield. driver Kenneth Morrison, 25, of Hobbs, faces no charges. Funeral arrangements for both victims were announced, with Coleman to be buried in Brownwood and Speaker to be laid to rest in Hamilton after services.
An early morning fire destroyed the headquarters of the Communist North Korean Residents Assn in Tokyo. Police suspect arson. Two officials of the Redi group were injured in the blaze.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev said he would avoid a situation like Eisenhower faced when Japan canceled his planned visit. He spoke in UCHAREST Romania amid questions about Western diplomacy and Soviet travel.

Lightning from a Saturday night storm near Idalou caused at least one farm home to burn and killed three horses on the John Horan farm south of Lubbock. The same storm ripped cotton in the Petersburg area and dropped heavy hail, leaving most fields stripped. Rain totals reached up to two inches in parts of Lynn and Terry counties with water on FM 54.

Grenadier Guards rushed from Byward Tower to find a sentry in scarlet and bearskin dueting with another guard’s son. The sentry was charged with irregular conduct, ordered to do extra duty, and had privileges reduced.
President Eisenhower, 69, drew a riotous welcome in Seoul as security had to divert crowds. About four million in Hawaii and more globally greeted the tour amid a minor Okinawa protest and a canceled Japan leg. He met Korean leaders including John M. Chang and urged the national assembly to pursue a truly democratic government.
A fairly strong earthquake jolted central and southern Chile Sunday night, felt from Santiago to Puerto Montt around 7:30 p m. CST. No initial damages or casualties were reported. Earlier a landslide near Panguipulli Lake near Valdivia killed 18 people, marking one of the most violent quakes since May.
