Ethics, tire safety bills signaled by Texas governor
Gov. Preston Smith signed an ethics bill that could jail a legislator for five years for unethical conduct and a tire safety measure mandating inspections to curb worn tires. The ethics law requires officials earning $11,000+ to file annual financial statements and establishes a six member ethics commission. The tire bill sets tread and fabric standards and expands inspection requirements to reduce accidents and insurance costs, with related public safety notes.
