A Hok kaido University student Giichi Sawada left a 2000 word letter in a map back pocket describing four days of digging and sleeping under snow after an avalanche struck his six man party in the Hidaka mountain range on March 14. He wrote of light fading and pride in his friends as he faced death and asked others to care for their bodies. The letter was found three months later by a search party.

Bloodiest Dominican clash as U S troops advance
U.S. troops and Dominican rebels fought Tuesday in the bloodiest battle of the uprising. Man slain on border canal in West Berlin gunfire
