Martial law spread to Cambridge Maryland and Danville Virginia as National Guardsmen faced rioting crowds. In Washington D C thousands marched for Medgar Evers funeral in Jackson Mississippi while unrest continued in numerous cities. Governor Tawes called up 500 guardsmen and warned martial law could tighten.

Rains and Tornadoes Hit South Plains, Then Heat Returns

Storms brought heavy rains and at least one tornado across the northern South Plains, easing heat but damaging crops and killing a man in Muleshoe. Lubbock logged 90 as Dallas hit 99, with other Texas towns seeing 100 plus. Rain totals reached up to four inches in some areas, with a twister destroying a barn near Portales and another near Muleshoe. The Rev. Geronimo Guerrero died of a heart attack during the storm.

Soviet cosmonaut set to orbit with first spacewoman

Soviet reports say Valery Bykovsky will stay five to eight days in space with a cosmonette named Ludmila ready to launch from central Siberia. A five day orbit would set a new record as Khrushchev hints at an extended flight and a 24 hour stay for the woman is often cited.

Former President Herbert Hoover at 88 is seriously ill with anemia and internal bleeding but not hospitalized. Three doctors attend him at Waldorf Towers New York suite. family spokesman says no hospital transfer planned. Hoover had surgery last year to remove a malignant intestinal tumor.

Capital Demonstration Faces Kennedy in Civil Rights Protest

In Washington more than 2,000 demonstrators marched for civil rights as Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy arrived. The crowd grew restless when signs accusing the Justice Department of discrimination were shown and Kennedy urged progress, noting gains while promising more. The event, called by Julius Hobson of the Congress of Racial Equality, included questions about FBI action in Mississippi and hiring of more Negroes. Pilot dies in Clovis plane crash near base

First Lt. Kenneth G. Plimpton, 24, of the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron based at Cannon AFB, was killed when his F-100D Super Sabre crashed and burned one mile northwest of the base at about 3:17 p.m. An officers board investigates. He is survived by his wife Phyllis and his parents in Maldin, Massachusetts.

GALVESTON UPI Delegates of the Texas Real Estate Association plan a vote today on a resolution to banish members found guilty of dual contracting or fraudulent mortgaging. Joe Phillips of Lubbock says the pledge targets long standing home loan irregularities investigated by a district court grand jury. The measure aims to curb deceptive practices nationwide, matching NAREB efforts since 1958.

Khrushchev Rejects On-Site Inspections For Test Ban

Premier Khrushchev told Pravda the Soviet Union would not allow on-site inspections as part of any nuclear test ban.
