Twisters Sighted Across Texas Panhandle and West

Severe storms tracked through the Panhandle and North Texas with a tornado watch in effect from 3 to 9 p.m. A funnel cloud near Dalhart and a twister north of Borger were reported. no injuries occurred. Hail reached marble size near Amarillo, and multiple counties faced thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Paratroops clash with Red Force in central highlands

South Vietnamese paratroopers clash with North Vietnamese regulars near Firebase 5 in the central highlands. The communique says 24 enemy soldiers killed, 1 South Vietnamese killed and 21 wounded. A separate action near Krek in eastern Cambodia left 29 enemy dead and 5 South Vietnamese dead with 11 wounded. 77 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were reported killed over the weekend.

Four of Nine Premature Babies Die in Sydney Hospital

Motel Slaying Sparks Clash

A Big Spring man, Michael Ray Mathis, 26, died in a Midland shootout with law enforcement after authorities say Mathis shot at them from his home. A second body, identified as Bob Johnson of Big Spring, was found in the trunk of a car outside Mathis house. The confrontation involved about 20 officers including Texas Rangers. Mathis then died in the exchange. Police said a nearby residence was evacuated and a fire started when gas shells were used. An anonymous tip about a motel shooting prompted the investigation and led to the discovery of spent shells and blood at the Thrifty Lodge motel.

Plainview man believed run down on rural road
