UPI reports 10 Cuban exiles returning from a raid on Cuba were detained in the Florida Keys after their PT boat sunk. They allegedly attacked a sugar refinery at Matanzas, damaged facilities, and engaged Cuban forces, with one raider wounded.

A Texas A&M registrar H L Heaton 57 was kidnapped by Gerardus F Hauwert 35 of Houston after returning from lunch in an A&M parking lot. Hauwert forced Heaton to cash a 250 check and drove toward the Mexican border before fleeing at a service station. he was captured near LaGrange.

NASA ends Mercury to push Gemini program

NASA announced it will terminate the Mercury Manned Satellite Program to focus on Project Gemini. James E. Webb said the plan includes a December or January suborbital test with a boilerplate Gemini, a three month follow up test of the full system, and by late next year a full unmanned or possibly first crewed orbital Gemini flight.

Cotton bill would cut support prices for 1964 crop

Texas Farm Bureau officials urged support for SB 1458 at a meeting in the New Johnson House. The bill would set a 30 cent per pound national average support for middling cotton and raise the allotment to 17.5 million acres, with a potential 29 cent rate in 1965 if supplies grow. An export subsidy of 64 cents per pound is proposed, down from 84 cents.

Runaway Grain Truck Slams Through Duluth Traffic Group

Casey Charness Jr. disqualified after stumping on ducat at National Spelling Bee

In Washington Casey Charness Jr. 13 of Lubbock was disqualified in the fifth round after failing to spell ducat a gold coin slang term for ticket. Forty-one of 69 spellers were eliminated as 18 boys and 10 girls left the competition with Steven Palmer Vernon still active and other Texas hopefuls advancing. Defeat for Kennedy on Federal Aid Expansion Vote

The House rejected Kennedy administration plans to expand federal aid for chronically unemployed areas by five votes. Southern Democrats shifted to oppose the measure amid a high civil rights profile, with 189 Democrats and 15 Republicans voting for the bill and 57 Democrats and 152 Republicans voting against it. The White House offered no comment immediately.

Escapee Horace Hayes Captured in Lubbock After Seven Years

Horace Earnest Hayes, 38, an escapee from a Raleigh North Carolina prison farm since 1956, was arrested in the 700 block of 34th Street after a Hereford drunkenness charge led to fingerprint checks. Hayes, who used the alias Harold Ernest Hayes, said he was tired of running and faced potential six more months upon return. He had moved from California and lived with his wife and step-children before arrest.
