One of Labors Mightiest John J Lewis Dead At 89
United Press International reports John J. Lewis longtime head of the United Mine Workers died Wednesday night at Doctors Hospital at age 89 after an acute illness. He had led the UMW since the 1940s and oversaw the welfare and retirement fund. Lewis survived by a son, a wife who died in 1942, a Florida-born son, a daughter, a brother and a sister, with memorabilia and public memory marking his controversial career and battles with the government.
