House Backs Strip Mining Bill Veto
The House sustained President Ford's veto of a federal strip mining bill by a 278 to 251 vote. Ford cited fears of oil dependence and foreign cartel pressure while Zarb warned the bill would cut domestic output and cost jobs. Udall led the override bid, claiming White House pressure watered down the measure.
