Avalanche Journal reports a vacation weekend of deadly crashes: a father and six children killed near Pontiac Illinois when their car collided with a truck, plus a Milpitas California four car pileup that claimed five lives. Ontario Canada also saw two fatal incidents.
In Spur the fifth annual S. M. Swenson Ranch reunion drew many from Spur and nearby ranches to swap stories of pranks and hardships from the turn of the century. Ninety attendees registered and over 300 ate at the noon chow line as Lester Ericson, son of a former top hand, was reelected president for 1963 44 with Jim Barron as vice president and Mrs. Bob Dixon secretary. Other officers and holdover directors are Spur residents.
Alabama Governor George C. Wallace says he will call about 1500 National Guardsmen for standby duty to maintain order during integration tests in Tuscaloosa. Plains include barring two Negroes from the main campus and deploying a large security net around the University amid local Klan activity.
A humorous quote defines the Race Track as the place you never blame ignorance when you lose but brag about knowledge when you win. The line appears in the paper’s humor column with references to regional guardsmen and the Ft Brandon National Guard Armory in Tuscaloosa.
Casey Charness Jr. of Lubbock heads to National Spelling Bee Week in Washington with his “Speller’s Soliloquy” inspired by Hamlet. He and other NA A region spellers will tour historic sites and compete in the finals as a large crowd gathers for the event and Washington trips.
Lions International District 2T-2 holds a two day state gathering in Lubbock with about 2 000 Lions attending. Bert Belcher of Seagraves named District Governor succeeding Wayne Richardson. 17 year old Alice Ballard of Shallowater crowned 1963 District 2T-2 Lions Queen, replacing Linda Morrison of Levelland. State queen candidates breakfast begins at 7 a m in the Grand Ballroom of the Pioneer Hotel. The State Council of Governors meets 9 to 10 30 a m.

A storm system across the South Plains produced eight tornado funnels and 65 mph winds. A Plainview resident was injured as a drive in theater roof toppled, a dugout collapsed trapping umpire Wayne Davidson, and two inch rains drenched Hale County. Local twisters damaged a Ropesville farm, Levelland area, and Edmonson near Plainview with no further injuries reported. The Weather Bureau warned of possible tornadoes into the night as storms moved across Texas and the Midwest faced lightning deaths.
President Kennedy told California Democratic women's group at Hollywood Palladium that Congress must pass a $10 billion tax cut and other measures to avert a downturn. He cited civil rights tensions, Alabama integration protests, and a larger labor force, warning that solutions must be complex.
Dr Stephen Ward a 42 year old osteopath and artist was arrested near London on a charge of living on the earnings of prostitution. He was taken from Watford in his Jaguar after a police inquiry at Marlybone and is to appear at Marlborough Street Magistrates Court.
