Plainview pilots for Atmospherics Inc and the Plains Weather Improvement Association fly twin Comanches in a hail suppression program started May 10. Through May 28 they completed 10 hail-seeding and eight observation missions amid fierce storm dangers for crops and aircraft.
Ex gridder known as High Pockets Overton, 54, his wife Michon 20, and stepdaughter Victoria 8, die in a single engine crash south of Coyotte, New Mexico. Eyewitnesses say the plane stalled during a turn near Copeland and Overton ranches. bodies removed after plane nose-first impact. Services for the victims are pending with Julian Mortuary. Overton, a 1930s Texas Tech football alumnus, served in the Legislature.
The U S Supreme Court ruling upholding multimember districts pleases House leaders in Texas while dashing some liberal and Republican hopes. Rep Delwin Jones praises the decision as the state plan keeps multi member districts, with Craddick challenging constitutionality in district court. Gov. Preston Smith had not read the ruling.

A blast at an oil recycling plant near Edinburg caused flames reaching about 50 feet high. No injuries were reported. The plant, owned by Pan American Petroleum Corp, refined light oil into natural gas for other refineries. Fire units from Edinburg and neighboring towns battled the blaze.

Midland city council, in a special session, schedules a June 23 public hearing to discuss zoning changes for package stores and liquor by the drink after voters approved them Saturday. Officials say new ordinances would regulate location and a city license fee of 887.50, with state licensing for liquor by the drink.
A 72nd District Court grand jury seated by Judge Pat Moore issued 19 felony indictments against 17 people after reviewing 29 presented cases. Two Lorenzo men Santiago Mendez and Lionisio Mendez, both 21, were charged with assault with intent to murder in a May 14 attack at Rip Griffin’s Truck Stop. Roy Gonzales, 93, was wounded in the incident. James Edward Sneed, 36, faced robbery by assault charges but was not indicted. Willie Mac Hereford, 39, had murder with malice charges referred to another proceeding. The panel completed work in one day and was released after 4 p.m.
