The Atomic Energy Commission halts funding for the Rover nuclear rocket program at Los Alamos, eliminating an $8 million, 200-person operation. LASL Director Bill Richmond says the move effectively ends the 12-year program, with some staff to be redeployed and others laid off. The cuts also affect Nevada testing sites and related space propulsion contractor funding, with overhead costs and reverence payments to employees to be covered from current funds through June 30.
