Investigations into three unsolved Lubbock County killings over the past 11 months yield little progress. Victims include a city administrator fatally shot, Jillie Mae Miller near Shallowater, and Naomi Miller Martin, all found with brutal wounds. Police see no confirmed connection among the cases.
North Vietnamese rockets struck Da Nang as fighting raged near Khe Sanh in northwest South Vietnam. Allied sources say 174 NVA killed across multiple ground and air battles while South Vietnamese Marines suffered losses near Khe Sanh. US helicopter gunships pounded NVA mortar positions with no American casualties reported.
Thunderstorms sweeping 100 miles across the Panhandle South Plains unleashed up to 3 inches of rain with hail and high winds in a Saturday storm. Heavy rain fell in Hockley County with Pettit and Whiteface reporting over 3 inches and marble hail. A lightning fire killed a Hale County woman and injured her sister while flash flooding and road closures occurred near Levelland Whiteface and in Lubbock. Forecasts warned of lingering rain and cooler temperatures with a 0 percent chance of more rain this afternoon and tonight.
A house fire in Plainview believed caused by a lightning strike on a television left Mrs. Mary Well Hamilton 90 dead on arrival at Central Plains Hospital. Her sister Mrs. Sallie Speed 85 remained in critical condition with severe burns. Firefighters pulled them from the burning 301 Cedar Ave. home as two rooms burned. Mrs. Hamilton, a longtime Hale County pioneer, is survived by Harold Hamilton and two daughters in Plainview and Covina Calif. Services pending.
Nancy Siler Mitchell, missing since Sept 26, 1970, was found dead four miles east of here. Bones located by oil field workers ended a three year search with over 10 volunteers aiding law enforcement. Clothing matching Mitchell was found near Texas 302. remains identified by dental records. Her children were unaware of their mother’s disappearance.
More than 300 area public school teachers will start summer workshops in Lubbock Monday. Roland Myers named managing director of Lubbock Theatre Center. France opened its 1971 nuclear test program with a low power device detonated Saturday at Mururoa Atoll lagoon. The Defense Ministry said the blast, likely balloon-suspended, marks France’s 40th nuclear test since 1960.
