Empty Barracks Built by Estes Stand in Midland Ruins
Three abandoned Midland barracks once bought by Billie Sol Estes in 1953 for 6000 later sold with land for 107000. Estes moved them to three lots and formed a partnership with William Scott Paul Ivey and M H McKinney. The property passed through several owners, faced tax liens, and yielded little rental income as failures to rent persisted.

University of Oregon Medical School 75 Years of Progress
The University of Oregon Medical School celebrates 75 years, tracing its origin to Mackenzie’s Dream in a mortgaged grocery store. It grew from seven faculty and 18 students in 1887 to a 900-student, 13-building campus with a nine story research center and new outpatient clinic. Notable advances include the Stubblefield twins separation in 1959 and breakthroughs in leukemia treatment, total body X-ray irradiation, and the artificial mitral valve developed in 1960.

Texas Ranger Clint Peoples said agricultural agent Henry H. Marshall picked up a hitchhiker on the morning of June 3, 1961, en route to Franklin with his son. The hitchhiker, not a local man, was dropped off and Marshall was later found shot on his farm. A justice of the peace ruled the death a self inflicted shooting.
