EPA chief seeks stronger pesticide law to curb eagle poisonings

EPA administrator William Ruckelshaus told a Senate subcommittee that current FIFRA rules lack strong controls and cannot stop accidental wildlife poisonings. He cited 48 dead eagles in Wyoming from thallium sulfate, electrocution, and gunshot, and noted six shipments totaling 65 pounds to ranchers in 1970 71. The poison was linked to corpses used for predator control and sold by American Smelting and Refining Co. He said charges may follow but emphasized voluntary labeling and weak enforcement under existing law.
