Texas Attorney General Crawford Martin urged residents to avoid long term lifetime memberships. He cited health spas and dance studios that closed, leaving customers stuck. He noted contracts may allow service or fee changes without member consent and recommended yearly or monthly payment plans.
Texas Tech reports a summer school record of 7 900 paid and processed students flagging a possible final class total above 8 000 and surpassing 1970’s 7 872. Lubbock Christian College also posts a record summer enrollment of 276, up from 207 in 1966. Summer classes continue with second-semester registration in mid July and Tech plans a August 21 commencement.
Police chased a speeding car to ground in a City of Lubbock cemetery early Wednesday. occupants fled on foot. The recovered car had been stolen from Cletus Graves Auto Service & Sales at 2319 Texas Ave, a theft Graves did not know about. Investigators found the office burgled and a ring with 28 vehicle keys inside. The chase began in the 2600 block of Weber Drive.
A patrolman stopped a car in the 5000 block of Brownfield Road after observing it on Coronado High School grounds. Inside, officers found what appeared to be marijuana in a small bag beneath the front seat. Four youths were remanded to juvenile custody. ages 15, 15, 14, and a 17-year-old released after questioning.
In 72nd District Court Wednesday Judge Pat S. Moore revoked the probationary sentence of burglar John Tovar 19 of 2725 Erskine. Tovar was assessed two to three years for a 1969 local break in after Assistant District Attorney Troy Hurley showed probation violations.
