Storms bring scattered rain and lightning across South Plains

A series of electrical storms swept the South Plains Saturday night delivering up to .60 inch of rain in short bursts. Lightning caused minor damage, with parts of southwest Lubbock dark for up to an hour. Weather officials predicted more moisture as thundershowers continued across the area.

Death Ends Famed Film Radio Career Of Jean Hersholt

Hollywood notes the death of Danish immigrant and actor Jean Hersholt after a year of illness. He would have turned 70 on July 12. Hersholt known as Dr. Christian died at Beverly Hills home with his wife Via at his bedside. Wilson May Witness Test of H Warhead

The U S was reported ready to test a hydrogen warhead light enough for the proposed 1500 mile guided missile. Woman Dies In Dawson Crash On U S 180

An El Paso woman, 45, Mrs B B Lambert, died while her daughter was seriously injured when her 1954 Chevrolet struck a stalled 1947 Ford on U S 180 near Dawson. Ernest Abbitt 24 of Big Spring was pushing the stalled car with another motorist when the collision occurred. Lambert’s daughter, Mrs Robert W Wilson of El Paso, was taken to Las Vegas General Hospital. See Dawson Crash Page 14.

Pacific Northwest Floods, Idaho Dam Bursts Across Regions

Floods hit the Pacific Northwest with the Columbia and its tributaries rising and threatening Bonners Ferry. An Idaho dam burst killed two people. British Columbia deployed troops to flood-threatened areas as southern Indiana recorded record low temperatures.

Forecaster Elmer Fisher from the Portland forecast center reports snowmelt easing in headwaters and only small rises anticipated in upstream tributaries.
