A low pressure system drives record highs across Lubbock Midland and El Paso with 101 102 degree readings as heat dominates the Panhandle. Officials note a slow moving cold front may bring relief and potential storms later in the week.
Memorial Holiday traffic deaths surged toward 400 as officials reported a rate of more than six fatalities per hour Americans were dying on highways with 367 deaths by midnight and drownings and other causes pushing total violent deaths to 546.
Texas lawmakers approved a history making minimum wage bill and a teacher pay plan raising averages by 1800 over two school years. The package sets a 1.25 wage floor Feb 1 1970 rising to 1.40 in 1971 and adds kindergarten funding starting 1970. Exemptions include family firms and workplaces with under four workers. Debates highlighted opposition from some lawmakers and passage by 89-60 in the House.
South Vietnam President Nguyen Van Thieu, ahead of a Nixon meeting, warned that China’s example shows how excessive concessions can invite a Communist takeover. He cited the event as a caution to Washington amid ongoing peace talks and regional tensions.

About 2 050 graduates and 6 500 guests attended Texas Technological College’s 43rd commencement in Municipal Coliseum. Dr Fred Harvey Harrington of Wisconsin warned that higher education faces unprecedented strain and may lack solutions to major global problems in our lifetimes. See GRADUATES Page 4.
The Texas Senate approved a name change bill for Texas Technological College to Texas Tech University after a heated speech by Sen. H. J. Blanchard. Gov. Preston Smith is expected to sign soon. Blanchard criticized English professor Dr. Kline A. Nall and said the dispute had lasted a decade as Tech leaders sought input from stakeholders.
In Austin, Blanchard backs a name change despite protests from critics led by Kline Nall who calls the bill a lie. Nall and Senator Bates clashed over the accusation, with Nall later retracting his remark about minority influence. The Senate debate on the TTA bill continues.
Delegates at the 60th Northwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church pass resolutions urging the General Conference to revise its stance on civil disobedience and military service. They reaffirm obedience to law and oppose civil disobedience in a democratic society, citing concerns over potential anti integration positions and disorder. Hollis Horton presented the resolution with Ed Robb’s second. county officials comment on law and order.
Dr Edward Teller proposes lunar nuclear tests to study the moon through seismology and to power a future research station. He favors a controlled underground blast to sample lunar interior and suggests extracting oxygen and water from lunar rocks for life support and rocket fuel. He notes space nuclear projects face treaty limits but may proceed for peaceful purposes.
In South Vietnam on Saturday two major engagements cost 19 American lives and 50 wounded as fighting resumed after the Buddha birthday cease fire ended. The 1st Infantry Division reported 54 enemy KIA in 12 hours near Pleime?ong in the Central Highlands. to the north near Dear Duc Pho nine U.S. soldiers were killed with 29 wounded in a 10 hour clash. U.S. air power supported ground troops as Communist shelling increased on Allied bases and towns.
Texas Tech directors plan to divide the campus power contract between Lubbock Power and Light and Southwestern Public Service, about 500000 dollars yearly, while preparing to rename campus schools as colleges and pursue a university designation. A fatal accident at a San Antonio site killed Gerald Stevens, 48, when a car fell during lifting operations at a construction project.
