Seven mile chase nets capture of alleged killer in Iowa
Pete Smith a 66 year old farmer tracked Gayne Gilbert Smith for seven miles to a barn near Lake Wapello where trooper Richard Smith flushed the suspect from a haymow. Smith admitted following tracks in rain and coordinating with Walter Cantrell and Sheriff deputies before the arrest. Mayor Ira Stufflebeam praised Smith’s role while noting his humble nature and simple wish for a fifth of whisky.
