In Idalou at about 1 45 p m Saturday the Rev Bobby Way land Mankin 35 of Lubbock died of injuries after a three vehicle crash. Four Lorenz motorists were treated and released at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock including Alexandre Ybarra 40 and three passengers Alex Rudy and John Lopez ages 13 12 and 16. Bruce A Boyd 16 from Idalou was uninjured. Police say Ybarra s pickup headed west on 82 62 stopped to turn left onto 3rd St as Mankin approached in a sedan.
George McGovern muted his support for running mate Thomas Eagleton amid rising pressure to drop Eagleton from the Democratic ticket. The two planned a Monday meeting to reassess the situation as Eagleton faced controversy over his place on the ticket. Eagleton urged prayers and patience while they deliberate on the proper course ahead at the South Dakota Democratic convention.
