Miss Fort Worth crowned Miss Texas at Will Rogers Auditorium

Molly Grubb, Miss Fort Worth and a Tyler native, won Miss Texas from a field of 63. Odessa’s Martha Whiddon placed first runner-up, with Lubbock’s Jan Glenn second runner-up earning a $450 scholarship. Grubb, 20, said she was surprised to crack the top ten and cried with happiness as she accepted the title.

Sudden Storm Floods Part Of El Paso

A thunderstorm dumped heavy rain on El Paso causing flooding up to 10 feet in northeast areas and water over curbs in downtown. No injuries reported though electricity was interrupted in isolated sections. Rain also fell five miles east of Dell City and the front extended to Virginia triggering storms elsewhere.

Two Vessels Collide Off Golden Gate

Coast Guard reported two ships collided one mile off San Francisco near the Golden Gate. The Philippine vessel President Quirino sent an SOS claiming it was in danger after striking the freighter Tsuneshi Maru.

Caracas Quake Kills At Least 11. City in Panic

A powerful afternoon quake jolted Caracas causing widespread damage and fear. Police report 11 dead with 1,000 injured as high rise buildings and smaller dwellings collapse while hospitals call doctors to emergency duty. Texas Tech approves 1.34 million bond issue for expansion

The Texas Tech board OKs 1.34 million dollars in bonds for classroom expansion as part of a larger 16 college issue totaling 8.63 million dollars financed under a state building amendment. Bonds issued to Halsey, Stuart and Co. at about 3.99 percent. Bar Group Works to Overhaul Texas Penal Code

A 26 member committee led by W. Page Keeton and Charles Herring aims to draft a complete reorganization and restatement of the Texas penal code by 1969. The effort seeks consistency across sections such as theft penalties and murder rulings, with input from judges prosecutors and defense attorneys, to replace the 1856 framework last substantially revised in 1925.

Tragedy on Forrestal After Explosive Fire Off North Vietnam

An explosion and fuel fire aboard the carrier Forrestal in the Tonkin Gulf killed 46 sailors and pilots, with 56 injured and 60 missing. About 80 Americans were affected as bombs exploded on the flight deck, 25 planes destroyed and 31 damaged. Naval crews searched for survivors as the ship headed to Subic Bay for repairs.

El Paso Voters Reject Revised City Charter

El Paso voters defeated a revised city charter by an 8 to 1 margin. Nine thousand seven hundred thirty three opposed the charter while one thousand two hundred thirty three voted for it. The 25 member commission had labored 24 years on the document amid newspaper and mayoral opposition.
