Hale County Wreck Kills Latin American in Plainview

A Latin American, Alfred C. Garza about 52, was killed instantly when his car collided with a Hale County deputy sheriff’s vehicle about 10:30 a.m. five miles east of Orton on U S Highway 70. Deputy Doyle Ferrell was injured and transported to Plainview Hospital. Garza’s death brings the area traffic toll to 60 for the year. Burial arrangements were to be announced by Wood Mitchell Funeral Home in Plainview.

UN Observer Killed by Mine Near Gaza Strip

Danish UN civilian employee Svend Rasmussen, 30, died when a mine exploded near Nahal Oz close to the Gaza border. Judge Alton B. Chapman of Ploydada led Judge Herbert C. Martin of Littlefield in the race for a seat on the court of civil appeals. Early returns showed Chapman with a 5,000 vote lead from 35 of 46 counties with 15 counties remaining. Totals stood Chapman 37,063 Martin 32,069.
