Sen. Allen J. Ellender of Louisiana, president pro tempore and longtime Appropriations chair, died of a heart attack at Bethesda Naval Hospital at 7:15 p.m. He was 81 and had returned to Washington from Louisiana where he campaigned for a seventh term. Senate adjourned in his honor after news of his death. Ellender had complained of stomach and chest pains and collapsed from cardiac arrest. Four Florida children ages 9 to 12 were lifted about 350 feet by a tornado while playing in a backyard tent. They landed in a vacant field, shaken but not seriously hurt, recalling the Wizard of Oz as the tent pitched up and rolled.
