An Associated Press report notes many American women replace Miss and Mrs with Ms across business and government. Letters increasingly use Ms on letterheads. Margaret Douglas-Hamilton, a Boston attorney, says she prefers Ms despite being married.
Severe thunderstorms lashed the Panhandle and Central Texas with hail up to two inches and strong winds. Flooding worsened in Central Texas with Brady recording 13.5 inches of rain since Friday. A funnel cloud threatened Wharton as the system pushed south from the Oklahoma Panhandle into counties including Ochiltree Lipscomb and later many others.

Apollo 15s main rocket engine fired successfully as the crew prepared for a moon landing. Scott and Irwin cleaned shattered meter glass while mission control planned further checks to ensure the meter works in lunar vacuum. Hadley Rille region slated for touchdown with Falcon lander awaiting crew descent.
The first new Eisenhower silver dollar, 40 percent silver and costing $10, was presented to Mamie Eisenhower by President Nixon at the White House. Secretary Connally and Mint Director Mary Brooks attended the ceremony, with Nixon joking about catching any falling dollar.

Mrs. Irwin and two others returned from Monday's Cape Kennedy launch with allergies requiring shots. The 10 year old Jill Irwin also received treatment. Mrs. Irwin, in a pants suit outside her Spanish style home, dismissed fear and urged a positive view despite the event.

Sixty five visitors including several children were stranded for hours Tuesday night in a storm tossed cable car on an Alpine peak. A separate car crashed and its occupant was killed when it jumped the cable. Mountain police guided all passengers to safety using a 120 foot escape line with no injuries reported.
Labor Secretary Hodgson urged binding arbitration between four railroads and the United Transportation Union UTU to end a 20 month contract fight. UTU rejected the bid calling government bias toward management. The watchdog noted looming strikes on additional lines though White House said no immediate strike legislation is planned.
Two strong earthquakes struck the Solomon Islands on Tuesday with magnitudes 6.5 and 6.3 reported by the National Earthquake Information Center and Honolulu Observatory respectively. No tidal wave was foreseen though areas around New Britain suffered heavy damage and a crash site near Rabaul was described as worst hit. In Ecuador a separate Monday event killed one and injured four in Guayaquil with impacts felt in nearby nations.
Vincent Teresa a former mobster testified before a Senate investigations subcommittee that only federal agents can eliminate organized crime, citing crooked local officials as a major problem. He claimed mob funds bought police protection in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and said 6 to 7 million dollars flowed from his operations. He urged expanding FBI powers.
The forecast calls for a slight chance of thunderstorms with mostly partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures. Expect a high in the low 90s and a low near 70, with southeasterly winds 10 to 20 mph this afternoon.
