July heat remains dominant across Texas with highs in the 90s and onear 104 in Presidio. Lubbock hit 97 and Wichita Falls 102 while 90s lingered into the evening as storms faded along the New Mexico line, not entering the South Plains.
Judge Robert H Bean announced after a hearing in 140th District Court that he would grant a temporary injunction preventing closing the city and school tax rolls except for the specific property involved. The action would keep the rolls open until settlement. Plaintiffs Gabriel Elias and Bella Angel of Montgomery County Pa challenged the assessed value of their Lubbock property for ad valorem taxes contending overvaluation. Attorneys indicated a jury trial in the fall is likely.
The Senate passed a 2.06 billion foreign aid bill after a seven day debate over the Vietnam War and the aid program. The measure funds another year of economic aid and two years for Latin America’s Alliance for Progress, with a separate 892 million military aid bill to follow.
