Hoffa Guilty On Fraud Conspiracy Charges Faces Prison

James R. Hoff a president of the Teamsters and six co defendants were found guilty of fraud and conspiracy in a pension fund loan scheme. The seven defendants face up to 20 years and 13 000 in fines for the fraud and five to ten thousand per conspiracy count. Hoffa was sentenced previously for bribery and faces new penalties. The verdict followed a 147 count tally after a lengthy jury deliberation. Hoffa showed no comment as his son reacted angrily in the courtroom. A Costa Rica quake was also reported with no casualties.

Thant declines second term amid global shakeup and Texas rain

United Nations Secretary General Thant said he will not seek a second term as his four year mandate ends in 1966. In Texas, scattered rains cooled the South Plains while Matador and surrounding areas report about one inch of moisture aiding crops. Weather officials warned showers may continue but were unlikely to end the heat, with Wichita Falls hitting 109 degrees and other cities posting 100 plus readings. A tornado near Joplin, Missouri caused injuries and damages of about $250,000.

Sneak Thief Strikes Two Lubbock Homes

Police hunt a light-footed burglar who entered two Lubbock residences while occupants slept. The thief entered by removing window screens, climbed onto beds, and stole items including a purse, trousers, cash, and a check. A neighbor found a purse not belonging to the victims.

Widow of Estes figure challenges tax claim against Orr estate

Barbara Jean Orr widow and executrix of Harold E. Orr contests IRS claims that the Orr estate owes over 100000 in income taxes and penalties tied to the Billie Sol Estes scandal. Orr died last February from carbon monoxide poisoning. The tax petition was filed July 2 in U S tax court with a Dallas hearing planned for late this year or spring.

Portugal Rail Crash Kills 69 as Train Falls Near Porto

A two car diesel train derailed and overturned near Oporto injuring up to 200 and killing at least 69. The train was en route from Povoa de Varzim with passengers returning from weekend trips to Atlantic beaches. Fire crews and police reported ongoing body recoveries four hours after the crash.

Stolen Funeral Home Girl Found In Alley

A 16 year old girl Therese Koert fee was abducted from Haben Funeral Home in Skokie and found in an alley near Chicago suburb Des Plaines. Police say a screen was cut to take the body before her funeral and describe two suspects one later released. She had died from a cerebral hemorrhage after swimming last Tuesday.
