The National Weather Service at Lubbock Regional Airport logged 0.74 inches of rain in Lubbock, bringing the monthly total to 6.54 inches and closing within 0.24 inches of the July 1928 record with a week remaining.
The hearing on T E Dickerson’s dismissal over falsifying registration cards for five children began Friday. Weather updates report scattered rain across the South Plains with rainfall totals varying by town and no severe storms. Cotton crops in the area are in good shape but need hot dry weather to finish.
Richard Allen Schoenfeld 23, the youngest suspect in the Chowchilla bus kidnapping, surrendered in Oakland accompanied by his lawyer. He faces 27 kidnapping and 16 armed robbery counts linked to the abduction of 26 children and their driver near Chowchilla and imprisonment for 16 hours.
House Republican Leader John Rhodes of Arizona says Ford may need Reagan as running mate to unite the GOP. He believes a Ford Reagan ticket could appeal to conservatives and that Reagan might accept if drafted by delegates or invited by Ford. Ford says he will consider any Republican for vice president.
Ford asserts 1 185 delegates with Reagan at 1 026 and 96 uncommitted as UPI tallies adjust after Hawaii entries. Reagan aides dismiss the press conference as unsurprising while promising future accuracy demonstrations. See FORD Page 14
