Dist Atty John R. Gillham was gunned down in front of his Clarendon office by a suspect, Clyde Gilbreath, 60, who was arraigned on murder with malice charges. Witnesses said Gilbreath’s son helped restrain the suspect as Gillham fell after bullets from a 30-30 rifle. Gillham died at the scene after multiple shots struck him in the back chest and arm. The shooting occurred about 1:30 p.m. and involved a confrontation over a divorce case.
A bone spur on Mike Collins the command module pilot for Apollo 3 will require surgery and remove him from the crew. Officials said Collins was admitted to Wilford Hall Hospital in San Antonio and the operation is planned for today. The medical director at MSC Dr Charles Berry stated Collins will not fly on the third manned Apollo mission slated for 1969, while officials declined to speculate on his future flight prospects.
