Senators vow to fight Kennedy civil rights measures
Sen. Russell B. Long vowed to oppose Kennedy civil rights proposals until hell freezes over and then fight on the ice. Sen. George Smathers said he would filibuster the overall legislation, opposing public accommodations and school integration provisions. Long attacked the administration for flip flopping on federal funding in desegregation areas. Smathers favored tax legislation over the civil rights bill, arguing tax cuts would boost jobs and aid African Americans.
