Residents of Hurtwood and the Reese Air Force Base clear zone gathered with 89 attendees at a public meeting to debate land acquisition north and south of the base. A speaker urged residents to “put your money where your lawful taking of land” amid varied calls to listen and consider the plan.
Landowners around Reese airfield furious over proposed Air Use Zone plans as the U S Army Corps of Engineers and Fort Worth land appraisers map a 125 acre north and 72 acre south clear zone. Farmers fear loss of barns titles and rentals while residents demand quick answers and possible changes to the plan.
First Federal Savings and Loan plans a $1 million refurbishment of the former Dunlap building at Broadway and Avenue L in Lubbock. The move will place its headquarters in the refurbished site next summer with 45 000 square feet on the ground floor basement and mezzanine for offices and services.
The Civil Aeronautics Board ruled that major interstate airlines discriminate by charging up to twice intrastate rates in California and Texas. It ordered fare equalization within 90 days, allowing separate intrastate tickets to exploit lower local prices.
Southwest Airlines gained city council support for a reduced fee commuter service to Lubbock Regional Airport. The Chamber of Commerce remained silent after aviation committee members urged noninvolvement. Hearings on Southwest's petition in Austin are set for July 19 as the airline seeks up to seven daily flights.
Five Lubbock bail bond licenses were renewed by the Lubbock County Bail Bond Board at a June 3 meeting. Minutes show County Judge Rod Shaw recorded the vote in his handwriting, after previously saying he could not recall action. Renewal fees of 250 dollars were paid late, and renewal paperwork remained incomplete, with questions about form requirements and whether the action was properly documented.
Frenship Independent School District voters face an 8.5 million bond plan with a 76 percent tax hike to fund a new high school. Superintendent J Weldon Bennett warns defeat could cost up to 1.5 million due to rising construction costs. The election Saturday 7 AM to 7 PM at the current high school.
