Dies Named to Appeals Court Post in Texas

United Press International reports that Martin Dies Jr. was named chief justice of the 9th Court of Civil Appeals in Beaumont, moving him from potential Senate candidate to judicial position. The appointment by Gov. Preston Smith takes effect Sept. 1, replacing the late James F. Parker and likely ends Dies’s 1972 election prospects.

Quake Raids Central Chile and Argentina Cities

A powerful tremor struck central Chile and parts of Argentina late Thursday. In Santiago buildings collapsed and power and communications failed while seismographs placed the epicenter near Valparaiso. Space Radiation Gauge Lofted Into Orbit

A 260 pound satellite carrying instruments to measure cosmic radiation from the sun and other stars was launched from Wallops Island Virginia. The four stage Scout rocket reportedly performed as planned and the instrument package aims for a roughly circular orbit about 370 miles above Earth.

Lubbock faces possible heat record this week
