Standing Cotton Acreage On High Plains Best In Two Decades
A comprehensive survey by the Lubbock Cotton Exchange and Plains Cotton Growers Inc. shows 2,828,000 standing cotton acres across 25 counties on the High Plains, up 87 percent from last year's July figure and near the all time record. 1972 plantings reached 2,657,800 acres with weather trimming to 2,356,400 by harvest. Irrigation covers about 65 percent of cotton acreage, while drought stress hits dryland sorghum and other moisture dependent crops.
