Critical fumes kill Odessa oil worker in rescue attempt
Larry Cupp 20 of Odessa died on arrival at Medical Center Hospital after inhaling poisonous gas while trying to help co workers fallen into an oilfield storage tank. George Wilcox 43 and David Grubb 18 were listed in critical condition at the same hospital. The trio, all Air Construction Co crews, entered the tank to reach Wilcox who had fallen in during cleaning. They were removed by teammates wearing masks. The accident occurred near FM 1936 on the Conoco First National Bank lease at about 9 20 a m Friday. Services for Cupp set for 2 p m Sunday at Temple Baptist Church with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born in Colorado City and came to Odessa six years ago from McCamey. He attended Odessa College. Survivors include his parents four brothers a sister and grandparents.
