More than 150 persons hear research and merchandising reports during Tech Swine Day in Lubbock area. Chamber of Commerce forms subcommittee to review city highway plans. West Texas Museum study mission role discussed.
The City Planning and Zoning Commission approved extending Briercroft shopping center by about five acres southwest of 50th St and Ave T. They refused to lower commercial zoning on six adjacent lots. New set-backs include 70 ft from Avenues T and U and the alley north of 52nd Street, plus a 130 ft setback from 50th Street.
U S Navy jets from the USS Hancock bombed Haiphong two miles northwest of the city center hitting oil storage tanks and the port’s two pumping stations used to unload tankers. The strike damaged 70 percent of facilities with 20 percent surviving the prior June 29 attack. One U S plane was shot down but the pilot was rescued.
About 400 residents of Argyle Minnesota were moved from the town after a pilot sprayed a chemical believed to be mosquito control agent. Officials said the second fill used Parathion mislabeled as Malathion and warned parathion could be fatal in sufficient exposure though the sprayed dose was deemed weak. No illnesses were reported though some residents had mouth sores and authorities urged caution.
Weather over the past two weeks reduced expected mosquito influx into Lubbock officials said. Despite concentrations in Shallow Water Wolfforth and parts of Lubbock six mist spray rigs worked up to 18 hours daily to curb population. Health officials warned of potential invasion if cooler weather arrives and noted the floodwater varieties dilute the threat of encephalitis carrying mosquitoes. See MOSQUITOES Page 1.
Kern Buck 17 and Rinker Buck 15 from New Jersey landed at International Airport in a rebuilt 1943 Piper Cub with a 90 horsepower engine. They left New York last Saturday and plan to reach Los Angeles by July 9, routing via Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock and Abilene before El Paso. their father is also a pilot.

An 84 foot parabolic radar at the Clear Missile Early Warning site began operating to detect ballistic threats from Eurasia. Weighing 185 tons, it can detect a 11 inch wire at 2500 miles, one of five in service with sites at Thule Greenland and Yorkshire England. It costs 19 million and transmits data to the Pentagon Strategic Air Command and Royal Air Force.
President Johnson ordered renewed peace efforts between the Machinists union and five airlines Eastern National Northwest Trans World United as a two thirds halt crippled air service. Labor officials plan new talks Saturday while Civil Aeronautics Board coordinates scheduling and traffic priority to cope with the crisis. Three men Claude Edwards 22 Ronald Wilhelm 21 and Gene Mc Cain 20 were ordered held without bond on murder charges in the Breckenridge service station slaying. police say Carnes was abducted robbed and shot near a pasture after the station was found open and unattended.
Rains of up to seven inches drenched parts of the Hill Country west of San Antonio with five foot rises in Frio River. The Dalhart area in the Panhandle faced severe thunderstorm alerts and a 120 mile line from Lamar Colorado to Dalhart carried threats of large hail. Dallas City and South Plains endured heat with Lubbock noted near 96 degrees.
