Dewey Heads West On Unofficial Campaign Tour

Gov. Thomas E. Dewey sped west on a 4500 mile unofficial campaign trip to preempt a Taft backed move at the national convention. He travels with his wife and two sons and will meet party leaders as far west as Oklahoma and Missouri before attending a governors conference in Salt Lake City. Dewey rose to prominence as a rival to Taft for the nomination, with supporters hoping for western delegate backing, though he remained noncommittal about candidacy at this time. Sapulpa residents welcomed the Deweys and planned a simple visit with a public reception in their honor while avoiding major campaign appearances.
