Lubbock area readers are invited to a public forum on the Texas Tech campus today to air views on Gov Connallys plan to revamp the state college system. The notice lists sections for state and national topics and directs readers to related articles on constitutional change and economic policy.
Austin Bureau reports a proposal to create a new Lith District Court for Lubbock County was introduced in the legislature. Lubbock Reps Delwin Jones Bill Parsley and Reed Quilliam lead the effort with other supporters citing overwhelming local backing and prior bar association discussions. The measure needs at least five House members to sign before a floor vote. News notes strong judiciary support from district judges and local officials. Also reported is a San Antonio fire at a foam plant killing one and injuring seven others.
Wall Street breached the 900 level in heavy trading led by strong earnings. General Motors reported 1964 profits of 1.735 billion dollars, the highest in history, boosting market optimism and sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average to 900.95.
President Johnson openly supports Ambassador Maxwell D Taylor as he handles the volatile Saigon politics after Khanh deposed Huong. Washington says no plans for Taylor to return, while U.S. and Khanh leaders prepare for future meetings and joint efforts against the Viet Cong.
Police dogs pursued German immigrant farm laborer Harry W. Hubach after a dawn raid at Northwest Industries in Edmonton’s industrial airport. A guard died, three U S Air Force jets were damaged by dynamite, and Hubach faced murder charges as investigators linked the attack to a planned destruction of fighter aircraft.
Queen Elizabeth II paid personal homage at Westminster Hall before Sir Winston Churchill's coffin. Eisenhower arrived from Europe to attend the state funeral with American delegates including Dean Rusk and Earl Warren. Churchill’s wartime leadership, from Normandy onward, is reflected as dignitaries from 115 countries gather for the funeral.
Vandcuffed and carrying a heavy traveling bag, convicted swindler Billie Sol Estes was hustled into Dallas County jail. Sheriff Mike Sullivan of Paso County said Estes was handcuffed during the 12 hour trip. Estes will appear in federal court where U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes will hear motions preliminary to his March 1 trial on charges he lied about his financial worth to qualify for government grain contracts.
Canadian River water treatment plant bids totaling about 4 million dollars will be opened at 2 p m April 6 at City Hall. Lubbock city council approved bid plans and authorized bidder notices after a day that included stock purchases for civ stores, traffic study authorization near ord Ph and College Ave, revised heliport ordinance approval, and road access decision along AO St. north of Knoxville to Peoria Ave. The council also heard a planning and zoning commission resolution for a comprehensive plan and referred it to the city manager for recommendations and requested additional planning staff.
Mrs. Baggett, president, tells the council the league restates positions on zoning and adds two new ones. She praises the council’s program measurement and projection in preparing and publishing a master zoning plan while noting no action on notification of gene changes to property owners.
A sweeping subzero wave drove temperatures to 27 below in the Midwest with a multi state blackout. A Fort Randall relay failure caused a 600 mile wide outage as power crews restored service and hospitals ran on generators while some areas faced snow and freezing rain.
Texas lawmakers moved on multiple fronts Thursday with Governor John Connally proposing a graduated ten year teacher pay raise and constitutional amendments. Senators advanced a beef labeling requirement with penalties and debated liquor law revisions and a per gallon tax on noncommercial boat fuel.
Near City, Brownfield men aged 27 and 38 were arrested by Labbeck Liquor Control Board agents on Farbhack County Road 835 driving a yellow pickup. Officers confiscated 38 cases of beer 4 cases of whisky and 6 cases of wine from the back and cab. Arrests led by David Carpenter and Bill Pierer.
Nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers, their wives and guests attended the Wth annual Police Appreciation Dinner at Kokko Palace in Laab hock. Richard P.P. Jackman’s speech mixed humor with a lesson on human relations, while seven new Lubbock officer recruits received badge cases.
