Weather brief notes a new storm entering Central and Northeastern Texas with winds from the east to northeast and gusts into the low 50s across southern areas. Forecasters expect easing by Saturday with possible impacts lingering into the weekend.
Lubbock reports 12 to 20 degree lows with heavy snow and hazardous roads. Schools closed in Muleshoe and Friona as officials warn travel is dangerous from Lubbock to Amarillo and east toward Dalhart. Weather officials predict peak in coming days with widespread snow and wind.
The release of the airmen was noted with mixed crowd turnout and cold conditions at the base. Families waited in staff cars as sand and ice control work continued on North Texas roads. Separate reports mention the death of a teen in Dallas and a modest Air Force reception ceremony planned for the airmen.
A Soviet trawler Sealand sank after hitting a reef in icy conditions off Sealand. Leonard McClosky 19 1607 Zenith Ave and Gary Richard Stephen 19 M15 26th St were taken to Methodist Hospital by a Rix Funeral Home ambulance and later to other hospitals. McClosky suffered a fractured left arm and facial lacerations while Stephen had possible heat injury and leg lacerations. Stephen was driver of one car in collision with Mrs Oneta Jones Sedgwick 41 Rt 3 Brownfield. Icy street conditions blamed for the crash and three other late Thursday mishaps with two more injuries.
Lubbock County faces a 2.5 day deadline for poll tax payments or exemption certificates. Tax office reports 7,153 poll taxes paid and 3,389 exemptions secured, totaling 10,542 registered voters. Peak presidential-year totals reached 41,600, while the 1969 off-year had 23,110 registered voters.
About 400 pupils from Lubbock and nearby areas prepare for final rehearsals at Monterey High School auditorium for a South Plains Music Teachers Association piano concert. John F. Price leads the Murphy Ensemble with multiple divisions performing works by Foster, Youmans, Kahn, Khachaturian, Rodgers, and others. Fifty aviation cadets 41 U S and nine foreign graduates received their wings in Class G1-E at Reese Air Force Base. Col H F Muenter urged graduates to uphold U S victory tradition as allies grow stronger. Honor graduate 2d Lt Robert P McIntire Mansfield Ohio led the class with top scores and awards. Other honorees included James Hostetter Manhattan Kan Hugh Langford St Louis Mo William Mortimer Montclair N J Laundry East Monroe Wash Clark Olander Chicago Pereich Wagner Metamora Myron Paddock Elkhorn. Amarillo AFB band played as a weather-cancelled review and flyover noted.
In Bakersfield California Richard Lindsey faces possible life imprisonment or execution for the kidnap and murder of Rose Marie Riddle. Judge William Bradshaw will rule after a sentencing hearing that may span most of the day. Lindsey and his pregnant wife Dixie are under heavy public sentiment as witnesses for the defense challenge his emotional stability.
The Amarillo court heard witnesses linking a .22 pistol to the case of Mrs. Miller’s slaying. A child testified hearing her mother plead “Bill, don’t do it” before shots, while a babysitter and police described the gun’s recovery. Police took Cleao Mansa Daggar to the station after the incident in which he allegedly assaulted his stepson. He was charged with assault and battery and driving while intoxicated. Eddie Eugene and Monsa Lee Dugger were taken to Lea General Hospital with bruises. the mother, a waitress, was removed from her job and later released to care for the baby.
Luke Cathey 30 of Amarillo was charged with murder by motor vehicle in the weekend deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Olney. Cathey was hospitalized in Wichita Falls with injuries.

AP reports Jack Carson married Sherman County resident Jane Tucker in a quiet motel ceremony to keep it low key. The actor, previously married to Lola Albright Kay St. Germain and Lyman, described Tucker as an old friend and said he wanted a dignified wedding away from Las Vegas hype.
