Richard J. Turner of Lubbock has bought a majority stake in Levelland First National Bank from Roy Riddel and T. W. Moore and will relocate to Levelland to help run the bank. R. H. Hester remains president until retirement with Turner joining the board as a director. Turner, a Texas Tech and UT alumnus, has cattle and banking background and will commute until he moves.
President Eisenhower defended new intelligence estimates cited by Pentagon leaders claiming no gap in U S power to deter the Soviet Union. Senator Richard Russell said the U S is woefully behind in the missile program, while Air Force officials touted progress. Gates faced Democrats over shifting focus from capability to intention in military estimates. The President backed Gates and asserted stronger estimates exist and will be clarified.
