Redistricting candidate calls for special session and reform

West Texas campaign swing sees Sen. Ralph Hall urging a special session to rewrite the Congressional redistricting bill with less variance. Hall criticizes court rulings on redistricting and school funding while supporting annual legislature sessions and a constitutional convention. He cites ethics reform as controversial and notes broader tax finance concerns for local governments. He likens issues to Texas Tech support and the Texas Water Plan amid broader state politics. The article also mentions Bill Hobby and Wayne Connally as leading contenders in the lieutenant governor race.

Brantley Dam Project Backed by Senate Debate

Interior Department told a Senate hearing it cannot back the Brantley dam for New Mexico until more is known about alternatives and costs. Sen. Anderson urged quick passage of a bill with Sen. Montoya to replace the McMillan dam on the Pecos River, citing flood risks and costs estimated at 45 to 50 million dollars. Texas conditions tied to Pecos River compact and water allotment were presented, while officials warned that repairing or replacing McMillan must avoid catastrophic flood losses.
