In Austin Sen H J Blanchard proposes a $10 million teaching and charity hospital within Lubbock County to be run by city county or a hospital district and seeks to rename the college Texas Tech University. House plans include a companion bill for the medical school with the same language. Local officials and medical groups back the effort while a hospital district is contemplated for tax support.
A massive dust storm raked Eastern New Mexico into Texas with 75 mph gusts causing widespread destruction. Roofs ripped off, windows shattered, and power lines downed as debris including bricks flew from buildings. At least two people died in a three car pileup near Roswell, with flights canceled and many towns including Lubbock and Midland hit hard. Snow flurries later followed, and parts of the Panhandle faced hazardous driving conditions.

Rushing, who owns about 40 percent, declined to give a price but said the stock carried a premium. He added the Lubbock area “is growing” and the bank is “about ready to blossom.”
A federal budget of 99.7 million dollars includes a new Lubbock post office site, studies for federal building sites, Webb AFB improvements, ballweevil control on the High Plains, and the Canadian River project nearing completion. The plan covers Reese AFB improvements and housing for officers, with final costs to be refined.
The National Cotton Council unanimously backed a one-price system for American cotton at its 59th annual meeting in Houston. Merchants agreed to a behind the scenes compromise to preserve harmony while Hugo Dixon of Memphis urged support for the resolution. The queen’s message honored Sir Winston Churchill as the House of Commons approved a state funeral with ten musicians to be part of the procession.
The House adopted a resolution for Sir Winston Churchill to lie in state from Wednesday to Friday. His state funeral will be held Saturday at St Paul’s Cathedral with burial beside his parents in Bladon churchyard near Blenheim Palace. The body will be moved from Hyde Park Gate to Westminster Hall at about 9:15 p.m. for public viewing.
Two New Mexico men were killed in a three vehicle pile up on a dusty highway near Roswell. John Ramey Hubbard 11 18 of Albuquerque and Thomas Athert Small died after rushing to aid others. another man was critically burned when a car exploded. A state policeman reported Jim Payne 25 of Albuquerque was gravely burned in the flames.
Governor Connally addressed over 3,000 Democrats and one Republican at a victory dinner, joking about acoustics and a tied controversy over a Texas Western University project. He warned fresh legislative challenges ahead, including districting questions involving George Parkhouse and Babe Schwartz.
