Hooded trio robs Plainview gas station for 63 dollars

Three young masked men brandishing a toy pistol robbed Lonnie and Tom’s 66 station at 10th and Colgate in Plainview. They took about 63.50 in cash before fleeing, leaving attendant J W Mannell shaken and the phone line cut. Police chased leads as the South Plains saw its 18th armed robbery since November.

21 Killed In Five Tragic House Fires

A rash of fires across the East Sunday killed at least 21 people, 18 of them children. Fatalities occurred in South Bend Indiana Marion Indiana Tompkinsville Kentucky Manning South Carolina Dallas and Knoxville with gas heater and stove malfunctions cited as causes.

Crash Kills Impersonator in Jamaica Plane Disaster

Police confirmed one of 37 victims in the Montego Bay crash was an impersonator who used Jaime Ruiz to board the flight. Ruiz remains listed as dead but is alive and en route to Bogota to resolve the mix up. The impersonator, Mario Campusano of Colombia, borrowed Ruiz’s passport to depart New York for Colombia. Campusano’s body was identified by his brother on a flight from Colombia to Kingston.

The 6125 ton American liner Santa Alicia and the 11000 ton Norwegian tanker Dorm collided off Portsmouth England early Monday. Initial reports indicated no casualties on either vessel.

Four Unidentified Planes Sighted Over Havana

Four unknown light planes were reported flying low over eastern Havana Saturday night, police said Sunday. The Cuban air force denied any aircraft in the area at the time. The city has seen a pattern of mysterious flights in recent months.

Nine Police Die in Africa Clash at Cato Manor

In Durban area Cato Manor, nine policemen were killed when hundreds attacked a patrol conducting a search for illicit liquor. Four officers were white and five African, with reinforcements arriving to quell the unrest. The violence marks the first major flare since August.

The Texas Tech Foundation reported 1959 receipts of 492878, an 84 percent increase from prior records. Dr James Douglass Sharpe, father of Gamble Benedict, was refused permission to see his daughter at the Benedict home. Gamble, 19, was brought back from Paris by her brother Douglas and a family lawyer after a four week sojourn with a married Romanian lover. Sharpe, custody holder for Gamble and her brother since 1946, said the scene at Idlewild Airport showed Gamble’s happiness to see him.

Diamond drill reaches toward trapped miners in South Africa

In Oalbrook South Africa a giant high speed diamond drill began boring a 4 inch bore toward 440 miners and 70 horses trapped 500 feet below in the Clydesdale coal mine. Rescue efforts paused after a rock fall, seven scouts were sent down but found no path to safety. Drilling foreman Dave Mackenzie said the bit had sunk 55 feet by afternoon and would take about 40 hours to reach the men.
