President Johnson Hospitalized With Cough and Chest Pain

Amarillo Scouts Helped By Jeep In Canyon Blizzard

Severe winter weather disrupted Texas with a second cold mass from a vast system. In the Panhandle drifting snow stranded about 20 vehicles near Perryton while Amarillo residents faced six foot drifts and 55 mph winds. Scout troops aided by jeep helped three cars climb hills in Palo Duro Canyon as city flights were disrupted and temperatures plunged.

Honolulu seismologists report a strong 7.5 magnitude quake hit Hamahera Island in the Pacific this Saturday. Initial assessments say at least 55 000 residents may be affected as crews assess damage and communicate with being. The quake compares with the 1964 Good Friday Alaska quake at 8 5 on the Richter scale.

Tragedy near Tulia claims six lives in crash

Six people died seven miles north of Tulia when a Santa Fe passenger train struck a Cadillac at a rural crossing. Victims included Mrs. Leonard Green, 21, her children Terry Lynn 3 Kerry Von 2 Teresa Gayle 9 months and James Murry Mason 66 Ella Mason 63. The car dragged 0.3 miles along the rails as rescue crews freed bodies from wreckage. The train operated from Lubbock to Amarillo under conductor R E McReynolds and engineer W F Doyle. The Masons had been shopping in Tulia before the tragedy.

Bandit Hijacks 7 11 Store On 59th Street

A masked bandit robbed a Food Store at 59th Street and Avenue P, forcing Ray Hawkins to fill a sack with cash from a green late model pickup arrival. The robber, about 5-10, 145 pounds, threatened to shoot and demanded bills in small denominations plus register change. The incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. with no other customers present.
