Emergency funds urged for age assistance and river authority reform

Von Block Among Nazi Dead In Silesian Battle Report

Moscow announced that Lt. Gen. von Block commander of the 58th German Tank division was found dead on a Silesian battlefield along with 4,000 other Germans after an encircled enemy group was liquidated. The chief of staff of the 10th German Motorized division was captured. German resistance was described as fierce but overwhelmed on all fronts.

Pilot lands with supplies as tow plane bursts aflame

Glider pilot J D Hill of Abilene Texas landed supplies to besieged troops at Bastogne after his C 47 tow plane burst into flames and was abandoned. Capt Thomas Corrigan of Kansas City reported the plane exploded in fire but continued on its course as an automatic pilot pulling the glider toward the front.

Tech Registration Underway At Texas Tech

Texas Tech registrar W. P. Clement reports 1 041 students registered for spring as formal registration runs from 9 a m to 12 noon and 1 30 to 5 p m today and Thursday. Pre registration figures are encouraging and a smaller overall enrollment is offset by many mid term high school graduates entering as freshmen.

Cards From POW George Parks Reach His Mother

Two prisoner of war cards sent by Pvt. George Parks have arrived for Mrs. Rachel Lawley of 2622 Twenty Fourth Street. Parks of the Lost Battalion, captured on Java, has been a POW nearly three years, now at Camp No 3 Nike Thailand. The messages say Best regards to all the family.

Testimony in Romo assault case in 98th district court

In Slaton on January 7 the Luis Romo trial for assault with intent to murder Pilar Turrubiartez concluded testimony and closing arguments were set to begin. Witnesses included J R Whitmire as a state witness and interpreters assisted Mexican witnesses. The defense argued self defense and prosecutors anticipated a jury verdict by morning. Turrubiartez, about 40, was shot in the back and is recovering. Romo, in his early thirties, faces another indictment for the same offense against Juan Ariaz. A separate theft case against Johnnie Dyer was dismissed. Judge Pardue issued a temporary injunction against C T Pierce restraining liquor trafficking threats.

Intermediate Chinese course offered at Texas Tech

Dr. Bing-Chung Ling announces an intermediate Chinese course for the semester. Courses 131 and 132 offered with prereqs. 131 is elementary and requires no prerequisite. Classes meet 7 to 8 30 p m for 131 and 8 30 to 10 p m for 192 in room 221 Administration building.
