Gov Dolph Briscoe was sworn in for a second four year term in Austin. Lt Gov William P Hobby joined in the oath during a televised ceremony. Briscoe pledged to propose legislation addressing Texas's pressing problems as about 2000 attendees watched including many schoolchildren.
Inflation surged 12.2 percent in 1974, the highest since World War II price controls ended, while December CPI eased to a slower rise. Ford anticipated a late summer economy turnaround with jobless rate at 7.1 percent. Labor market figures showed real pay still lagging inflation despite a small December gain.
