Longshoremen approve contract amid extended dock strike
In New York the Port longshoremen voted two to one to accept a waterfront contract despite an automation clause. The 60 000 striking dockers from Maine to Texas will not immediately return to work as firms in other ports must agree to similar terms. ILA leader Gleason says settlement now depends on shipping firms nationwide while NY Shipping Assn chairman Chopin pushes for rapid resumption of work. The walkout, beginning January 1, disrupted 520 miles of waterfront and cost about a quarter billion dollars. The final tally favored the contract 12 104 to 1 026 with 5 in favor and 1 O 26 against.
