Dignitaries from both parties flocked to Washington for Lyndon B. Johnson's inauguration. Johnson brushed aside address work as revelry and official events swirled around the capital. Celebrities and party leaders joined galas, receptions, and concerts amid crowded streets and hotel lobbies.
In Yukon Territory near Watson Lake a family trudged through 40 below zero conditions to reach help. Joseph Hayes 24 and Emma 2 attempted a radioed rescue carrying three children. Gloria 15 months died Jan. 12 and George Alex 5 died the following morning after two days on the trail. The parents left the bodies on trees for protection and pressed to the Davidson Ranch for aid.
Estes, the famed promoter, starts another bid for release after the Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal. U S Deputy Marshal and Abilene sheriff moved him from Abilene to El Paso for new proceedings while his lawyers press Justice Black to free him again. In Austin, area legislators draft bills including driver license raises and meat labeling while Odessa plans a new four year college and state leaders scramble to form committees for the new Texas Legislature.
The United States said the Soviet Union’s largest underground nuclear test released radioactivity into the atmosphere near Moscow. The blast in Semipalatinsk, Asia, was rated equivalent to 200,000 to 1 million tons of TNT. AEC blamed venting. US air sampling found traces over the Sea of Japan. Rusk urged full Soviet explanations while signaling tolerance pending treaty assurances. The 1963 test ban outlaws all nuclear explosions except underground. See SOVIET BLAST Page 8. Hearings Set Austin AP Sen A M Aikin Jr. said finance subcommittee will begin hearings on the $2.5 billion 1966-67 appropriation bill.
The weather satellite launch was postponed 21 hours from Tuesday night to Thursday morning due to trouble with the Delta booster rocket's second stage. New launch is scheduled for 2:52 a.m. Friday.

In New Orleans on Tuesday night firemen fought a lumberyard blaze along the Mississippi Riverfront for one hour and 45 minutes. Flames from stacked lumber leaped as high as a five story building and one firefighter was injured.
London reports that Winston Churchill, 90, shows no improvement after a stroke last Friday. Doctors led by Lord Moran say his condition deteriorated overnight and he slept poorly, with no sign of recovery. Moran stayed by the bedside for five hours and a morning bulletin noted no further deterioration in the four hours since the last update.
Amid prayers for guidance the public is told of Churchill's health as reports describe a potential cerebral thrombosis and possible further stroke. Spokesmen cite his fight and note breathing issues while Prime Minister Wilson postpones European visits.

The two houses held brief morning sessions and planned adjournment until Monday, despite Rep John Allen’s four day weekend protest triggering debate on adjournment rules.
